Wood roofs will last 20 to 35 years depending upon
the thickness, quality and exposure to weather.
In some areas moisture combined with freeze thaw
cycles can cause the wood to deteriorate within
10 to 15 years. Regular maintenance will greatly
extend the life of a wood shake roof. A wood shake
tune-up consists of replacing the weather damaged
shakes, sealing around flashing and problem areas.
Many insurance companies and some local municipalities
now require a fire barrier be installed under wood
shake.
