Built Up Asphalt or Tar & Gravel

Multiple layers of asphalt impregnated felt, usually ballasted with 3/8" nominal pea gravel.

    

Advantages

• 3 or 4 Layers of Asphalt Impregnated Felt makes a water tight barrier
• Inexpensive

Disadvantages

• Hot Asphalt contains V.O.C.'s and can be dangerous to install
• Requires aggregate on top to prevent black asphalt top coat from blistering
• Degrades rapidly without surface protection
• Aggregate collects dirt. Also must be removed for repairs or additional coatings.
